چکیده

In this paper we examine the impact of the adopted playout policy on the performance of P2P live streaming systems. We argue and demonstrate experimentally that (popular) playout policies which permit the divergence of the playout points of different nodes can deteriorate drastically the performance of P2P live streaming. Consequently, we argue in favor of keeping different playout points “near-in-time”, even if this requires sacrificing (dropping) some late frames that could otherwise be rendered (assuming no strict bidirectional interactivity requirements are in place). Such nearly synchronized playout policies create “positive correlation” with respect to the available frames at different playout buffers. Therefore, they increase the number of upstream relay nodes from which a node can pull frames and thus boost the playout quality of both single-parent (tree) and multiple-parent (mesh) systems. On the contrary, diverging playout points reduce the number of upstream parents that can offer a gapless relay of the stream. This is clearly undesirable and should be avoided as it contradicts the fundamental philosophy of P2P systems which is to supplement an original service point with as many additional ones presented by the very own users of the service.

LR2: Improving Push-Based Live Streaming and File Sharing in Peer-to-Peer Network

Random scheduling strategy has been emphasized and recommended in push-based P2P streaming systems due to its simplicity and high efficiency, and so is the latest first strategy in file sharing systems. However, how to take advantage of the low playout delay feature in the latest first strategy and the high playout probability feature in the random strategy still remains open. In this paper, we...

Playout Adaptation and Pull-Push Hybrid Scheduler in Live Peer-to-Peer Streaming

Together with the wide spread of network devices with broadband access, streaming has become more and more popular as the favorite mechanism for broadcasting real-time events to a large number of users. The traditional approaches to live streaming include IP multicast and client-server based streaming. Of them, IP multicast is not globally deployed while client-server streaming implies expensiv...

An efficient playout smoothing mechanism for layered streaming in P2P networks

Layered video streaming in peer-to-peer (P2P) networks has drawn great interest, since it can not only accommodate large numbers of users, but also handle peer heterogeneity. However, there’s still a lack of comprehensive studies on chunk scheduling for the smooth playout of layered streams in P2P networks. In these situations, a playout smoothing mechanism can be used to ensure the uniform del...

Delay and playout probability trade-off in mesh-based peer-to-peer streaming with delayed buffer map updates

In mesh-based peer-to-peer streaming systems data is distributed among the peers according to local scheduling decisions. The local decisions affect how packets get distributed in the mesh, the probability of duplicates and consequently, the probability of timely data delivery. In this paper we propose an analytic framework that allows the evaluation of scheduling algorithms. We consider four s...

Modeling and Performance Analysis of Pull-Based Live Streaming Schemes in Peer-to-Peer Network

Recent years mesh-based Peer-to-Peer live streaming has become a promising way for service providers to offer high-quality live video streaming service to Internet users. In this paper, we make a detailed study on modeling and performance analysis of the pull-based P2P streaming systems. We establish the analytical framework for the pull-based streaming schemes in P2P network, give accurate mod...
